Watford FC Women face Crystal Palace in a crucial match

Watford

Watford FC Women are back in action this weekend, as they host Crystal Palace at Grosvenor Vale on Sunday, November 5, 2023. The Golden Girls are looking to end their five-game losing streak in the Barclays Women’s Championship and climb out of the relegation zone. Here’s everything you need to know about the match.

Watford

The Opponents

Crystal Palace are one of the surprise packages of the season, sitting fourth in the table with 16 points from nine games. They have scored 24 goals, the most in the league, and have two of the joint top scorers in Annabel Blanchard and Elise Hughes, who have both netted seven times. The Eagles have won five of their last six games, including a 4-1 victory over leaders Liverpool.

Crystal Palace have a strong squad, featuring several international players such as Chloe Arthur (Scotland), Anna Filbey (Wales), Hayley Nolan (Ireland) and Araya Dennis (England). Dennis is a former Watford player, who scored the winning goal against Oxford United at Vicarage Road in April 2023 to secure promotion for the Hornets. She joined Crystal Palace in the summer and has been a regular starter for them.

The Form

Watford have had a tough start to life in the second tier, winning only one of their first nine games and losing the last five. They are currently 11th in the table, four points adrift of safety. Their last game was a 5-2 defeat at Birmingham City, where they conceded four goals in the first half. The Hornets have scored 11 goals and conceded 28, the worst defensive record in the league.

Watford have shown some positive signs, however, especially in attack. They have scored in seven of their nine games, and have some talented players such as Ashlee Hincks, Molly Sharpe, Amber Gaylor and Cherelle Khassal. They have also been boosted by the return of some injured players, such as Leanne Cowan, Lizzie Waldie and Frances Kitching, who could feature on Sunday.
