Sydney’s iconic IMAX theatre, located in Darling Harbour, is set to make a triumphant return after being closed for seven years. The theatre boasts one of the world’s biggest screens and will feature a range of blockbuster movies and documentaries, including Taylor Swift’s latest concert film.
A Long-Awaited Comeback
The IMAX theatre in Darling Harbour was a popular destination for moviegoers who wanted to experience the immersive and spectacular visuals of IMAX films. The theatre closed its doors in 2016 for a major renovation, as part of the development of the W Hotel building. The project faced several delays due to construction ownership issues and the COVID-19 pandemic, but it is finally ready to reopen on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.
The new IMAX theatre retains its spot in Darling Harbour, sticking out between two lanes of the Western Distributor. It features a 692-square-metre screen, which is the second biggest in Australia and the fourth biggest in the world. The screen has a 1.43 aspect ratio and is equipped with Laser by IMAX technology, which delivers crystal clear projection, increased resolution, deeper contrast and the most distinct colours ever available on-screen.
A Diverse Lineup of Films
The IMAX theatre will reopen with a diverse lineup of films, ranging from sci-fi epics to musical documentaries. Some of the films that will be screened include:
- Avatar: The Way of Water, the highly anticipated sequel to James Cameron’s groundbreaking 2009 film. The film will take audiences back to the alien world of Pandora, where they will explore new regions and cultures. The film will also showcase the stunning visuals and 3D effects that made the original a global phenomenon.
- Barbenheimer, a thrilling action-adventure film starring Tom Cruise as a former spy who is forced to team up with his estranged son to stop a rogue agent from unleashing a deadly virus. The film features breathtaking stunts and chases, as well as an explosive finale set in Sydney Harbour.
- Taylor Swift – The Eras Tour, a concert film that captures the pop superstar’s latest world tour. The film features performances of Swift’s most popular songs from her different eras, such as Fearless, Red, 1989, Reputation and Folklore. The film also gives fans a glimpse into Swift’s creative process and personal life.
A Premium Cinema Experience
The IMAX theatre offers a premium cinema experience for its patrons, with four ticketing options and a range of amenities. The ticketing options are:
- Standard: A traditional cinema seat with a leather look and feel.
- Full recliner: A luxurious reclining seat for the ultimate relaxation.
- Couples seat: A double seating option that provides a cozy and intimate setting for couples and friends, with a motorised back recline.
- Private Box: A premium experience for groups of up to four, featuring service to seat, an exclusive food and beverage menu, ample seating space and an elevated platform.
The theatre also has a candy bar, a full-service bar and a relaxing lounge area. The facility can also host educational programs and private events.
