The meaning behind ‘5280’

The new uniforms feature a bright yellow ‘5280’ on a black jersey, with dim mountains in the background. The number represents the altitude of Denver, which is exactly one mile above sea level. The jerseys also feature a white Ibotta patch, the team’s new jersey sponsor.

“5280 is a badge of honor. 5280 is a competitive advantage for us, and this City Edition uniform is an opportunity to reinforce that competitive advantage… It’s our rallying cry,” said Nuggets Chief Marketing Officer Declan J. Bolger.

“The skyline is at 5,280 (feet above sea level),” continued Bolger. “The skyline and number are interchangeable. Everybody looks at that skyline and knows that’s Mile High Basketball, Denver, which is at 5280.”

The inspiration behind the design

The new City Edition uniforms were inspired by the city’s love for basketball and the Nuggets’ history and heritage. The mountain-inspired design elements on the chest, back and shorts pay homage to the Rocky Mountains and the state flag of Colorado. The secondary logo on the shorts features a pickaxe and a basketball, symbolizing the team’s mining roots and identity. The burgundy trim and the unique number placement add a touch of elegance and style to the uniforms.

The new uniforms were designed in collaboration with local artist Jonas Wood, who is known for his colorful and geometric paintings. Wood said he wanted to create a uniform that reflects the energy and diversity of Denver.

“I wanted to make something that was fun and vibrant, something that would stand out on the court and in the crowd,” Wood said. “I think the 5280 is a great way to represent the city and the team, and I hope the fans and the players love it as much as I do.”

The availability and schedule of the uniforms

The new City Edition uniforms will be available for purchase at the Altitude Authentics stores at Ball Arena and online at NBA Store. The Nuggets will only be wearing the new uniforms at select home games this season, starting from Friday, Nov. 3 against the Dallas Mavericks.

The schedule for the 5280 Night / City Edition games are as follows:

  • Friday, Nov. 3 vs. Dallas Mavericks
  • Tuesday, Nov. 14 vs. Los Angeles Clippers
  • Monday, Dec. 18 vs. Dallas Mavericks
  • Sunday, Jan. 7 vs. Detroit
  • Saturday, Jan. 27 vs. Philadelphia
  • Thursday, Feb. 29 vs. Miami

The Nuggets are hoping that the new uniforms will inspire them to repeat their championship run from last season, when they defeated the Brooklyn Nets in six games to win their first NBA title. The team is led by MVP Nikola Jokic, who averaged 26.4 points, 10.8 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game last season.
