Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez, one of the most famous couples in the world, have recently opened up about their daily lives and their philanthropic work. The billionaire founder of Amazon and the former TV journalist have been dating since 2019, and have faced intense media scrutiny and public criticism over their wealth and lifestyle.
A ‘normal’ Saturday night
In an interview with WSJ. Magazine, Sánchez revealed what a “typical Saturday” is like for her, Bezos and their respective children. The couple has seven kids between them, ranging from 15 to 21 years old.
“On a typical Saturday, we hang out, we have dinner with the kids, which is always fun because you never know where the conversation is going to go with this many kids,” she said. “We are the Brady Bunch!”
She added that they usually watch a movie together, but it takes a long time to find one that everyone agrees on.
“We probably spend more time picking the movie than we need to,” Bezos smiled.
The couple also said that their lives are “pretty normal”, despite being engaged to the world’s second-richest person and America’s 24th-biggest landowner.
“Our lives are pretty normal,” Sánchez said. “We wake up, we have breakfast, we work out, we go to work.”
A passion for giving back
Sánchez and Bezos also shared their philanthropic projects, which they said are driven by their passion for making the world a better place. Sánchez serves as the vice chair of the Bezos Earth Fund, which has committed $10 billion to help Africa’s restoration movement, combat climate change, and preserve nature. She also works with the Bezos Academy, which aims to create tuition-free, Montessori-inspired preschools for disadvantaged children.
Sánchez said she donated $1 million to This Is About Humanity, which helped build educational learning spaces for the migrant children at the US-Mexico border. She also visited with migrant families on a recent trip to the border.
Sánchez and Bezos also created the Bezos Courage & Civility Award, a $100 million grant given to an individual they feel is trying to bring unity and positivity to the world. They have awarded country music legend Dolly Parton, chef and humanitarian José Andrés, and CNN commentator and social justice advocate Van Jones.
“We wanted to amplify their voices because the voices that are negative seem to get amplified in this world,” Sánchez said.
A journey to space
Bezos, who founded aerospace company Blue Origin, has been pursuing his dream of making space travel accessible and affordable for everyone. He and Sánchez were among the first passengers to fly to the edge of space on board the New Shepard rocket in July 2021.
Sánchez said she was thrilled to join Bezos on the historic flight, and that she is also getting her pilot’s license.
“I’ve always had a career very separate from my partner. We love to be together and we love to work together. He’s helping me with the book. He’s getting his pilot’s license. We fly together. We work out together. We’re together all the time,” she said.
Sánchez also said that she and Bezos have a strong bond and support each other in their endeavors.
“We have a lot of fun. We laugh a lot. We’re very compatible. We’re very supportive of each other. We’re very respectful of each other. We’re very loving of each other,” she said.
