Emma Stone, the Oscar-winning actress, made history on Saturday Night Live as she hosted the show for the fifth time. She was welcomed into the exclusive Five-Timers Club by two of its members, Tina Fey and Candice Bergen, who made surprise appearances to celebrate her achievement.
A Milestone for Emma Stone
Emma Stone first hosted SNL in 2010, when she was promoting her breakout movie, Easy A. She returned to the show in 2011, 2016, and 2019, showcasing her comedic skills and versatility in various sketches. She also appeared in some memorable digital shorts, such as “I Broke My Arm” and “The Beygency.”
On Saturday, December 2, 2023, she joined the ranks of Tom Hanks, Steve Martin, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Ben Affleck, Melissa McCarthy, and others, who have hosted the show five times or more. The Five-Timers Club is a fictional group of SNL hosts who receive a special velvet smoking jacket as a token of appreciation from the show.
A Warm Welcome from Tina Fey and Candice Bergen
During her monologue, Emma Stone reminisced about her previous SNL experiences and expressed her gratitude to the cast and crew. She then asked if there was anything special planned for her fifth time hosting, hinting at the Five-Timers Club tradition.
She was soon joined by Tina Fey and Candice Bergen, who presented her with the coveted jacket and congratulated her on her achievement. They also joked about how the club has become more diverse and inclusive over the years, as it used to be dominated by white men.
Fey and Bergen are two of the few women who have hosted SNL five times or more. Fey has hosted six times, while Bergen has hosted seven times. They are also the first and second women to join the club, respectively. Bergen was the first woman to host SNL in 1975, and Fey was the first female head writer of the show.
A Fun and Funny Night with Emma Stone
Emma Stone proved once again why she is one of the most beloved and talented SNL hosts, as she participated in several hilarious sketches throughout the night. She played a variety of characters, such as a hip-hop museum curator, a little orphan, a sleep demon, and a giant horse.
She also showed off her singing and dancing skills in a musical sketch called “Rome Song,” where she and the cast performed a catchy tune about visiting the Eternal City. She also joined the SNL band for a rendition of “Jingle Bells” during the goodnights.
The musical guest for the night was Noah Kahan, a rising singer-songwriter who performed his songs “Not Strong Enough” and “Satanist.” He also appeared in a sketch with Emma Stone, where they played a couple who had a romantic getaway in a haunted cabin.
Emma Stone is currently starring in the Showtime comedy series “The Curse” alongside Nathan Fielder. She is also gaining Oscar buzz for her performance in the Yorgos Lanthimos-directed film “Poor Things,” a dark comedy based on the novel by Alasdair Gray.
