Mariah Carey, the pop diva who has been dubbed the “Queen of Christmas” for her iconic holiday hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You”, has officially declared the start of the festive season with a frosty surprise. On November 1, the singer shared a video on her Instagram account, showing her being defrosted from a block of ice by some Halloween characters. As the ice melts, Carey sings “It’s time!” in a high-pitched voice, and then dances in the snow with her 12-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, who are wearing festive lights around their necks. The video ends with a message that reads “MariahSZN begins now”.
The video has received over 2.5 million views and thousands of comments from fans who are excited to celebrate Christmas with Carey. Some celebrities also joined in the fun, such as Kris Jenner, who wrote “It’s time!!!” and Kelly Ripa, who commented “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!”.
A tradition of spreading holiday cheer
This is not the first time that Carey has announced the arrival of Christmas with a humorous video. Last year, she posted a clip of herself transforming from a witch riding an exercise bike into a Santa-clad Mariah riding a reindeer. In 2019, she shared a video of herself smashing a pumpkin with a wooden mallet and answering a phone call from Santa Claus. In 2018, she posted a video of herself waking up to an alarm clock that played her song and putting on a festive onesie.
Carey’s tradition of spreading holiday cheer stems from her love for Christmas, which she has said is her favorite time of the year. She has released two Christmas albums, Merry Christmas (1994) and Merry Christmas II You (2010), which feature original songs and classic covers. Her song “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is the best-selling Christmas song of all time, and has reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart twice, in 2019 and 2020. The song also holds the Guinness World Record for the highest-charting holiday song by a solo artist.
A busy season ahead
Carey has a busy season ahead of her, as she prepares to release new projects and collaborations. She recently announced that she will be launching a line of holiday-themed merchandise with McDonald’s, which will include apparel, accessories, and collectibles. She will also be featured in a special episode of Apple TV+’s Carpool Karaoke with James Corden, where she will sing along to some of her hits and share stories from her career. Additionally, she will be releasing a deluxe edition of her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, which will include new photos and bonus chapters.
Carey has also hinted that she might be working on some new music, as she posted a photo of herself in a recording studio with producer Jermaine Dupri, who has collaborated with her on several songs in the past. She captioned the photo “Back in the lab 💋💋💋”, sparking speculation among fans that she might be preparing a surprise album or single for the holidays.
